How to Apply a Windlass Tourniquet
- Call 911: call, or have someone call, emergency services right away.
- Find the bleeding: locate the source of severe arm or leg bleeding.
- Position the tourniquet: place it 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) above the wound, between the wound and the heart. Do not place it over a joint. If you can’t see exactly where the bleeding is coming from, place it high on the limb, as close to the armpit or groin as possible.
- Tighten the strap: pull the strap as tight as possible and secure it back on itself.
- Twist the windlass: turn the rod until the bleeding stops.
- Lock it in place: secure the rod in the windlass clip.
- Record the time: write the time on the tag, tell responders when it was applied, and do not loosen or remove the tourniquet.
A tourniquet is for severe arm or leg bleeding only. It is not for wounds on the head, neck or torso. This guide does not replace training: we strongly recommend hands-on practice before you need it. See our first aid certification courses or the Stop the Bleed program.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can this windlass tourniquet be used on a leg?
Yes. The strap is long enough to go around the upper thigh, and the windlass gives enough mechanical force to control severe leg bleeding.
How long can a tourniquet stay on?
Once applied, leave it on and get medical help immediately. Only medical professionals should remove it. Write the application time on the tag so responders know how long it has been on.
Is this tourniquet reusable?
No. Once it has been used in a real emergency, replace it. For practice, use a separate training unit so your emergency tourniquet stays in perfect condition.
Why choose a windlass tourniquet over an elastic band?
The windlass rod gives you mechanical advantage, so you can create the high pressure needed to stop severe bleeding. Elastic bands and improvised tourniquets often can’t do this.
Do you ship tourniquets across Canada?
Yes. We ship across Canada and the US, with free shipping on orders over $100.
